First of all, I'd like to point out that this is a 2 hour movie.. It simply can't include every scene from the first half of the show! Too bad some of them were left out, but they weren't really that important for the story if you think about it. Sure, they helpt with the character development, but if you've watched the show you know the charachters already. And even if you haven't seen the show, the movie presents the characters well enough for you to get a good graps of who they are. What I'm trying to say is that I think they dida pretty good job with chosing which scenes to include and not. Not perfect but pretty good! The presentation of the survey corps was short and pretty irrelevant to include in this movie, since it was the only scene they appeared in. They could have saved it for the next movie and replaced it with more material for the scene where Eren saves himself, Mikasa and Armin from being shot by the canon. It felt like that one was a little too rushed in the movie. However, apart from the obvious fact that some scenes had to be cut out, there's nothing to complain about. The music is great and the art is amazing. I honestly think that the movie provides the same excitement and is just as epic as the show!

Attack on Titan is the very popular manga nowadays. It inspired some anime adaptations: 26 episode long overrated TV series, OVAs and movies. The movie I am going to talk about is the recap of 1-13 episodes. Is it a nice recap that can be enjoyed as much, or almost, as the original adaptation? No. This movie should be watched only by fans in order to remember the story before watching the upcoming second season. Because creators had to put 13 episodes in one film, they didn't include important moments that are necessary to develop characters: 1) The movie DOESN'T show how the relationship between Eren and Jeanwas shaped during military training. Their conflict considering how to live and what to do in the world was shrinked to from-time-to-time quarrels. 2) The movie DOESN'T show a well done flashback about how Mikasa was saved by Eren, which gave the audience explanation why Mikasa feels strong for Eren. The movie only shows pictures of memories and Mikasa's inner thoughts about this matter. If a newcomer were to see this movie before finishing original TV series, he or she would be left with a lot of questions. The movie is really fast paced. It provides a lot of action and less mystery about the world that characters live in. Their development was thrown away. And surely this movie was created to gain more money from fans (it seems that selling t-shirts, hoodies, coats, hats, figures ON EVERY CORNER is not enough). I don't say that the movie is bad. But remembering how Gurren Lagann was recaped, especially the second movie, I conclude that creators didn't put much effort into production. Yes, the art is very good but only it. Story: Having watched the whole anime before, I think that the story was told in an incomplete manner in the movie. For those who have never read the manga or watched the anime, the story might seem odd and underdeveloped at some parts. Too many scenes were taken from episode 1 (practically the whole thing), which could've been used to show the training part where Eren's comrades were introduced. One part near the end confused me because I totally forgot why that scene was happening and how the situation even began. As I said, some parts seem quite abrupt. However, the movie is a great wayto get an overall idea of what SnK is about. Those who have never watched the anime and are interested after the movie should definitely watch the anime to get filled in on the little details and important interactions between characters. Art: Great animation and art, as usual. It's the same in the anime and movie. Sound: I loved the addition of the emotional piano pieces into the scenes, but I was slightly disappointed that some songs were not included. Because the story was told at a faster pace than the anime, the music might seem to be a little too overused (but that's because one action scene came after another, which doesn't happen in the anime; thus, the feeling wasn't as epic as it was for me). The new songs were great, though! Character: The lack of character development is a great flaw since the movie tends to assume that we are all familiar with the characters, which those who have not watched the anime or read the manga are not. All Eren's interactions seemed to made up of anger and cliched lines, but again, that's the case because of the increased story pacing. There's more to Eren's character but that's all not in the movie. The same goes for the other leading characters like Mikasa and Jean. Armin was the only one whose character was well-rounded. We get to see a lot of the Armin that's in the anime. Enjoyment: The loopholes were a bit of a downer, but otherwise, I enjoyed it because I'm well-acquainted with the story and characters. Overall: If you're a fan of SnK, watch it to prepare for the next season or just for fun. If you're not a fan, watch it if you're feeling iffy about SnK and decide - you might either hate it for the loopholes and abruptness or you might just love it for the action and story and decide to watch the whole anime to get to know the characters and story better. This is a recap of episodes 1-13, so the story is essentially the same as that. I watched the series a long time ago now, but having caught up with the manga and knowing what I know, I felt like a lot of the characters have distinct personalities that make a lot of sense for their future decisions, and I felt like this held up well against the original. The art style, as always throughout this series, is simplistic at times, but in a way that that fact just makes it more unique and beautiful. The colouring and angles used are all amazing, the only issuebeing that during movements, some of the faces look a bit strange, and there doesn't seem to be a point where you can pause it when the characters are moving and it actually looks normal. Everybody knows and loves the theme for Attack on Titan, but I feel that not enough credit or attention is given to the actual sound effects. From the footsteps of titans to the simple sound of breathing. Experience such characters like: Armin Arlelt, the smart one who nobody knows if he is actually called Armin Arlert. Eren Yeager, the suicidal blockhead who can grow into a big angry boi when he bites himself, nobody knows how he figured that out, either. Mikasa Ackerman, the one making everyone say "it doesn't matter if they are family, she is unrelated".

It was a decent recap but I felt kinda empty afterwards since it was missing a part that made me join the hype but I'm getting ahead of myself. Story 4/10 You may be asking why I gave it this score. The reason is very simple they ended up cutting out very important scenes that gave the story depth and the scene that sold the legendary hype and bought the fans. The scene where the fan forgot for a moment that Jonah smoked his way out of the whale (no matter how inconceivable) but rather busted his way out right after having the most epic revenge speech I haveheard in ages. Art 10/10 The reason I gave it such a great score was because the art pulled off something that can really destroy a show if not handle correctly. The artist not only sustained a unique style throughout any given scene, facial expression etc but was able create a variation in character/titan design that is rarely seen in a very moe culture. Don't get me wrong I love moe but being able to express how serious something is in a serious anime is kinda the point. All in all there was no real artistic difference between the series and movie. Sound 9/10 I love this soundtrack. I sometimes listen to it when I work and sometimes when I draw comics but the one problem that keeps happening in every recap movie is that they change the soundtrack around thinking it sounds better but in all honesty the soundtrack used the first time around gave the build up necessary without losing any momentum. Character 6/10 If you haven't already noticed I have seen the series first and read the manga which tells you I know they messed up. They cut out very important character interactions and backstories that will leave newer people who could prepare for season 2 in a hour wondering why certain characters matter. This will kill the stories depth a bit. Enjoyment 8/10 It was pretty fun recapping my favorite parts coming with theories and finding subtle messages I didn't know about before. Overall 7/10 It was good not my best recap movie but it was something I would watch again. The loss of build up in somethings and sacrificing the best scene was a approach that could have been done better.

To preface this review, I've already watched the first season of AoT in its entirety. I only watched this because I wanted to start watching seasons two and three, and I haven't watched this show since it came out; I needed a recap. It cuts out a lot from the anime (just over three hours of content), but in order to have just a story recap, it's alright. The scrap the military training, the politics (which might be for the worse later on), and some side character arcs. In the show, you get to grow close to the side characters and see them grow. The onlyone of those characters that still undergoes an arc is Jean, though I'll concede that his was the biggest one of all the side characters. My biggest issue with this (from a film standpoint) is the pacing. It definitely feels rushed, and it makes total sense (considering it's the cliff notes of the first thirteen episodes of the anime), but it's not that bad. It just has a bunch of huge things happen in such a short amount of time instead of it being spread out evenly. My final thought is, if you have a way to access it, watch the show. I give this 4/5 because I already know Attack on Titan, but I'd easily give 4.5/5 to the anime itself. It's bleak and haunting, but the characters shine hope in already hopeless situations, and that makes it worth watching.

I can’t help but think about how unnecessary this movie was. I find this movie so unnecessary that I’m forcing myself to write this review. To summarise this movie it is a highlight of all the moments from the first half of season one of Attack on Titan. Serving as a summary film. So all the animation and sound design is good, but it’s just a mega rushed version of the first half of season one. The story of movie one summarises the entire first half of season one. As a result of cramping 13 episodes into two hours, the film is rushed. Viewers will seea important and amazing character moment only to be rushed into another important and amazing character moment. I can’t help but be annoyed at this. As a result, the film has really good story moments that have no emotional weight or any level of building up or pacing. In summary the story of the movie is just season one’s incredible narrative and story crammed into a two hour time frame. I don’t want to talk about the key moments in the movies because I’ve already talked about them in my review of Attack on Titan season one. The animation of this movie is shit. The animation itself is amazing as it is some of Wit studios best animation. But the film is just recycled clips of season one. The only editing done in the film was splicing clips from the actual anime and putting them all together. Which is pretty difficult if you are splicing and stitching clips into a two hour time frame. But compare splicing clips to actual animation is comparing high school science to nasa level science. So the only animation present in this film is just recycled clips from the actual anime. At the very least the animation is really good and it’s pretty good watching Wits animation. Even though the film doesn’t have any true unique animation. The sound design is the only thing in this film that was recycled and was ok. Attack on Titan has an instantly recognisable soundtrack that conveys the world of Attack on Titan and the emotion of the scene. The sound effects are still pretty good. The voice acting was just recycled, the only good bit of voice acting was the narration cause that was the only aspect of the film that wasn’t recycled. I won’t comment any further on the sound design as it is the best part of the movie but only because you can still recycle a soundtrack and there was a part of the sound design that was an original creation. The characters portion doesn’t deserve talking about in this film. I discussed the character aspects of season one in my review of season one. And because of the pacing. Important character moments across 13 episodes are crammed into two hours, so any emotional weight that these character moments had is voided and forgotten about. As we go straight from Jean considering his soldier life, to the Survey corps expedition outside humanities territory. If you want a quick summary of the first half of Attack on Titans first season, then I definitely have the film for you. Otherwise, this is just an unnecessary mess of recycled clips of the original series. Overall, I rank this 4/10.
