Might be a bit of spoilers in this review, fair warning: For someone who has been longing for a refreshing air in Dragon Ball, this movie gives it all of that. This movie also gives a direct dialogue which makes it far easier to understand for newcomers to the Dragon Ball series. Story: When it comes down to what this movie provides, it brings back nostalgia for most people but in current standards. The story is strong and straight to the point In regards to what the movie provides, it brings a heroic sense to the Dragon Ball series with a Marvel twist to it from the soundtrackto even the dialogue. The characters in this movie have a strong sense of justice from the Gammas to both Gohan and Piccolo, leading to an understanding from the two sides. Animation: In regards to animation being lead by CGI, I think this was a huge topic for most people when it was first announced. I personally feel that suits the movie and they did a fantastic job with delivering such a strong presentation, let alone it being the first time done by them. It leaves a very huge impact as a first project and what the future withholds with this new choice of animation. The best part about the movie comes from the pure fact that Goku and Vegeta are not brought in to win the fights like usual, which brings more depth to Piccolo and Gohan regarding their story. Having the main focus being drifted away from those two is where I think lies the allure of the movie because of everyone wanting some other fan favorites having showtime. Soundtrack: The soundtrack as I stated previously, is EXACTLY how Marvel would do their soundtracks. A heroic theme with heavy impact on what it is meant to hit works perfectly for this movie with how justice is the main theme. It hits home especially for those who are in love with the Marvelverse. Character: Piccolo and Gohan finally after many years get their shine that was very deserved. In all honesty, it seemed like it was more focused on Gohan being the main center but Piccolo plays an even bigger role than that and could be called his movie instead. These two have such an impact in Dragon Ball alongside Goku and Vegeta that it was honestly a sin it took them this long to decide on giving them such a deserving upgrade. Piccolo is almost like a teacher even in this movie throughout the entire time, even giving a talk to the Gammas and Gohan which leaves a huge imprint to anyone. As for Gohan, for those who love Super Saiyan 2 Gohan from Cell Saga and Ultimate Gohan from Majin Buu Saga, you are in for a real treat with them bringing back that level of Gohan. Overall/Enjoyment: This movie, in my opinion, is pure perfection and exactly what Dragon Ball is built around and has needed in such a long time. My enjoyment may be bias-heavy, but I truly believe this movie has lived up to its late promotional hype and will be talked about for a while. Having an upgrade for two of the fan favorites, on top of having such a sense of heroism that is Marvel-like was a perfect touch and suits perfectly well. I recommend thoroughly as a must watch from beginners to veterans of Dragon Ball. Edit from original review: Another thing to note if I did have to mention downsides, the controversial topic of Jiren being nerfed was uncalled for as well as wonky animations here and there are some negatives I would point out if I was asked about it.

While Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero's focus on characters besides Goku and Vegeta as well as it's expansion of the lore is welcome, it lacks the oomf of the prior and more action focused Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Will many hardcore Dragon Ball fans love it anyways? Most likely... Let's start with one of the biggest changes with this movie, and that's the new animation style. After it's new CG animation style was unveiled, I think a lot of people were tentatively waiting for this new instalment in the film series with baited breath. As trailers and more footage slowly rolled out, I think many peoplesgripes with the new style softened, and after seeing and entire film in this new style, I think it definitely worked (though I don't know if I'd want this as some new standard moving forward). Generally speaking, the new art style really pops and allows for some fun character animation, especially more varied and interesting character animation while characters are idle. Yajirobi eating some food while Piccolo and Korin talk, Pan spinning and walking around with big exaggerated steps and Gamma 2 striking ridiculous poses are just some of the moments that stood out to me where this new style really allowed the characters to pop and showcase more personality than ever before. Other scenes like Piccolo and Pan speaking to each other underneath a tree felt very immersive with the way lighting and shadows were handled, with spots of light breaching through the trees branches onto Piccolo and tracking accurately. The action itself was a little more hit and miss on this front. Depending the the battle or how it was choreographed, this new style could definitely match the more epic battles like in Broly, but more often than not fell flat. One moment that really stood out as a highlight of this new styles potential was a battle between Goku and Vegeta, where the CG and cel shaded style was blended together in a way that seemed seamless. In other action scene however, I felt like there was an over reliance on effects as well as 3D camerwork. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but overall most of the fights felt like they had less impact as well as creativity in the way they were animated and presented. Unfortunately, speaking of battles, while there were quite a few of them scattered throughout the film...they were generally over pretty quickly and didn't feel very high stakes. There are also new transformations, but with how they're worked into the battles, felt lacking, and as exciting as they were to see, weren't capitalized on. Obviously it's very exciting to see a fan favourite character achieve a new form after so many years, but then when they use a single attack and revert back to their previous form, it's definitely a bit deflating. The film begins with a fairly long explanation and set up for the new Red Ribbon villains that, while long, I was actually pretty on board. It was an interesting expansion of the lore, and an aspect of the lore important all the way back to Dragon Ball, but one that we rarely see or hear about these days. Speaking of, we actually get a really cool 2D animated segment of Dragon Ball Goku attacking the Red Ribbon Army that looks really nice. On this front, whenever a flashback is shown in the film it's done in 2D art and I thought this was an interesting touch. It conveys a sort of contrast between the new and the old which worked well with the drastically different art styles. I also enjoyed the way that the Red Ribbon Army was portrayed using propaganda to trick people into seeing their views on Capsule Corp and the Z Warriors feats. I liked the set up fine, and the new villain characters worked well enough (while by no means being interesting enough to steal the show). Where I felt the film really dropped the ball was with it's main big baddy hinted at from the start of the film. When mentioned, I got excited at the possibilities, but the execution was pretty crap. Where it could have been done in a very exciting and thematic way given the characters that were involved, the villain is reduced to a giant rampaging monster with a weak design. On top of that, I felt the final big character moment/transformation was really forced and poorly handled. Sure it was cool, but a few different decisions directorially could have had a huge impact on how the scene played out. Overall, the action worked fine enough, but also really didn't blow me away like with Broly, and many scenes were over too quickly. On a more positive note, I've always found the character work in these films to be fun and that continues here. While this film was advertised as a Gohan and Piccolo joint, it's really Piccolo who steals the show. He's upset at Gohan's lack of training and uses situations throughout the film to try and push him to unlock more power. He's also the main driving force of the film as far as uncovering the villains plans and also preparing their own counter attack. A fan favourite character who was definitely handled well. Gohan on the other hand is, alright...He's there and is given a big moment at the end but generally, he's just there. All in all, while it might sound like I'm being very critical of the film, at the same time i enjoyed it well enough. The character bits and humour sprinkled throughout somewhat made up for a pretty weak final battle and the new characters and lore introduced were fun. I definitely don't see this film making waves like Broly did, but if you're a Dragon Ball fan you're probably going to be checking this out and enjoying it on some level regardless.

Fair warning: i watched this with my girlfriend in the OG japanese without subs and i know NOTHING about dragon ball, i just wanted to spend time with her and she LOVES dragon ball Also, spoilers. Aight so first piccolo being a loveable grandpa to pan was so frickin cute, and that kid can kick ass, holy lord, what an excellent teacher he makes. RIP to carmine and the John cena-looking RR guy lol pan wrecked their asses Piccolo also looks damn good in RR uniform, 👌 nice When Gamma 2 comes in and they wreck his [piccolo's] brooding mountain, which was like bro. Where are yougonna sit and brood now, you destroyed it. You gonna sit on the ground like a normie now? Gamma 2 is also such a nut, i love him. And then he does the "goofy character sacrifices themselves for the greater good" trope and gets thanos snapped for it and just. Damn. What a good boy. What a funky lil man. Treasured bastard. I love him. magenta having an oreo dispenser in his car is what i hope the future looks like. I dont even have a car and im jealous. He also only smokes like half his cigars before lighting new ones, cmon bro. its nice that they showed what goku and vegeta were doing to explain why they werent there, and why no one could reach them. Just dudes being bros, fighting each other on an alien planet for the enjoyment of a cat god. Yknow. Normal dragon ball stuff. I like that they followed piccolo and gohan more than goku and vegeta in this, it feels like a nice break. Made it more of a father/son bonding movie than a "shoot 'em up, all action all the time, raaaaah lasers" movie yknow. Thats nice. The new transformations are kinda okay - piccolo got "handsome squidward-ed" and gohan kinda looks like dr stone mixed with an artichoke. Though im told thats just normal dragon ball stuff? I dont really get the point of the big boss being cell (but not really? Still confused) but like. Angry. Hes also HUGE which im not sure if thats new, or...? Why tf was RR trynna bring him back anyway? Make a new villain or something. Be creative. Again, we watched without subs so im missing TONS of context and knowledge bc I know nothing about this series lol. Fight scenes were okay, lots of flying around and shooting and yelling. Im told this is also just normal dragon ball stuff. The vid we watched was one of those 'sneaky phone videos in the theatre' so im sure the music was great but we couldnt hear it. Neat movie. Gonna watch it again later when subs come out so i understand whats going on.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was incredible. I was concerned because of CGI animation, but it becomes almost unnoticable after the initial 10 minutes or so. The fighting is very good throughout. The action scenes are very well choreographed and the music is also decent. The fanservice is legit perfect. They did Piccolo and Gohan justice and they also did justice to every other character that appears in this. I legit had a huge smile on my face from start to finish. I went in expecting nothing extraordinary but I was blown away this shit legit made my day. Highly recommend it 9/10

The CGI animation, an attempt to save money since the studio knows a lot of people are going to watch it no matter how cheap it looks, is definitely going to be a turnoff for most who liked the far more polished look of the Broly film. It is not terrible but having to get used to that after 25 years of being 2D ain’t easy. And the animators knew that, since whenever there is a flashback to previous events, they keep it in 2D since they know people will be pissed if they saw nostalgic moments in a completely different style. Anyways, assuming that isnot a problem for you and you expect to see 2 hours worth of non-stop action, which is what Dragonball has become after plot and characters became an afterthought, be prepared for a very long and overall dull buildup. There’s a lot of talking in the first half of the movie since the bad guys keep flashing back to previous events and plotting their next move. Nobody watches or cares about such things in a Dragonball movie. Once that is over the bad guys create two androids that magically match in power Gohan and Piccolo. Don’t ask why, it was already a stretch to have androids with more power than a Super Saiyan back in the Android Saga. The Red Ribbon can simply collect data and create androids that are as powerful as the current heroes with no cap. Go figure. The fight between the heroes and the new androids is tensionless since nothing feels like it’s at stake. The world doesn’t look like it’s in any danger and even Pan fools around when she gets kidnapped just for motivating her daddy to try harder. The final boss ends up being a buffed up Cell. Don’t get too excited, because he’s in his second form and completely mindless compared to his predecessor. The battle is eventually won with the heroes getting new transformations (Piccolo turns yellowish, Gohan gets longer silver hair for protecting a daughter that was never in any real danger). How unfortunate that they couldn’t do that in previous arcs when the world was in actual danger. It’s not like they were training non-stop since that event; the power ups were done automatically with no training. Then the villains turn allies because it’s a show for kids. As for the power houses of the show, Goku and Vegeta spend the whole movie at Beerus’ place, training along with Broly. And don’t expect something to come out of all that, they are not doing anything and they conveniently never find out about what happens on Earth. Essentially they were filler. Man, can you imagine not finding out about when Frieza attacked? Earth would be gone because they were careless. And that was several arcs ago. Goku and Vegeta are a thousand times more powerful since that time and yet they are less careful. What an amazing character development; they become more and more stupid. Oh, and Broly is now a doormat. A complete soyboy. That pseudo-Cell they were fighting was acting like Broly more than Broly was acting like himself. Here’s the actual problem with the movie. It was made to look like that Dokan gacha game. Its gamers will appreciate it far more than plain watchers. The plot is nothing to bother thinking about, the new power ups are lazy, and there’s not much to get from it besides an excuse for more units in the gacha game. It’s an overall bellow average movie in a franchise that is way beyond its prime and runs purely on milking nostalgia. Said nostalgia won’t even look nice from here on since it won’t even be 2D. Dragonball of today is a mutated zombie that doesn’t resemble the show we all grew up with in the 90s. There is no blood anymore, energy blasts don’t kill anyone anymore, nobody is an angry macho man anymore; they are all friendly soyboys, and now everyone looks like a polygon gacha unit. Fuck that shit.

Well it's been a while since I had some new Dragonball to look at so I was pretty hyped up for this one. Spoilers Ahead, you have been warned! Couple of things really stood out to me on trailers and the like. One of which being Pan being the epitome of adorable and the other being that Goku and Vegeta do not take centre stage. It's always been one of my biggest complaint of any big bad in Dragonball is the whole "Leave it to Goku" mentality that it follows. Hell I'd take Vegeta getting his own movie where he gets to be the hero but Idigress. Gohan and Piccolo are the main players here and it's more of a father / son kinda movie than any involving Goku with Gohan. (For shame! lol) I liked the idea of the Red Ribbon army having a front and thats why they are still there, though some silly things like their HQ being covered in the actual Red Ribbon Army logo feels a bit counter-intuitive. But then it's an anime, and I suppose it needs to be obvious to the heroes that they are the bad guys without too much investigation. A good few characters make returns, seeing Goten (With his End of Z Haircut) and Trunks attempt fusion....and I do mean attempt was exciting. I was gonna be so stoked for a teen Gotenks making an appearance only to see chunktenks instead. I could see the Xenoverse DLC a mile away if they had him get it right. Magenta was a pretty close character to Red and it was nice to have a clear villain. Watching him shoot Dr Hedo without hesitation really cemented that point for me. Pan was wonderful throughout this though perhaps a bit too clever for a 3 year old. You could have passed her off as 5 or 6 easily but I understand that timing wise, the end of Z she was 5 years old so I'm guessing Toriyama needs some chronological leeway for the new season of Dragonball: Super. Don't get me wrong I loved her in this, she was really cute and her interactions with Piccolo through the whole movie were really fun to watch. Then we get to Gohan, who seems to have regressed to how he was pre-Tournament of Power as he has lost his fighting edge....again! At least lost it enough for Piccolo to be really angry with him for it, it doesn't surprise me at all the actions he had to take to push Gohan to new heights. At least he is a bit more of a father to Pan than Goku was to him, but there isn't that much in it and that makes me quite sad. I'm hoping we see a bit more development on this front on the upcoming season. The Gamma androids and Dr Hedo are both worth a mention here. Hedo in particular I liked as a character as he develops a bit of morality as the movie develops as he gives off the impression of cookie cutter evil on his reveal. But there is a bit more depth to him as he is infatuated with Super Heroes and being one himself. He gets to prove himself later on against the new Cell monster. The Gammas are both pretty cool additions, both of which have quite different personalities to each other. They wouldnt have been out of place in the Tournament of Power, thats for sure. Their redemption is pretty awesome and I expect to see some of these guys make an appearance in the future. Piccolo definitely is the star of this movie in my honest opinion, we follow him for most of the film and we get to see an actual USEFUL wish on the Dragonballs instead of them just being used as a Deus Ex Machina every other time. He is the first of the heroes to ever wish for power and it was refreshing to see. His new "You've been tango'd" form is interesting and is welcome. It will allow him to at least keep up with the Saiyan characters for a while I think instead of being simply relegated to Henchman Masher as he always has been before. Gohan's new transformation (No idea what it's called) was kinda out of nowhere and I'm curious as to what the reasoning was as it didn't look like Ultra Instinct despite the hair colour being the same. However I'll be waiting to see what the explanation behind it is. I didn't really like how it looked as his signature bang looked really huge and it kinda clashed with the rest of the aesthetic of the form. Then we get onto the true big bad. That being Cell Max. I personally wasn't a fan. I almost got flashbacks of Bio-Broly and we all know how good that was. Essentially a monster much bigger than the original and no personality, just big berserk me smash, nothing more. I know it was necessary to have something big to push Gohan but even a proper clone of Cell with more power would have been better. After all, Cell is arguably one of the most loved villains in all of Dragonball, mine included and this felt like a true disservice to him. Side stuff, Goku and Vegeta spend all movie in a sparring match and if you are a Vegeta fan like me then I HIGHLY recommend watching til after the credits. There isn't much more I can add to that. Overall, I enjoyed this movie, it was great to have a new central focus and I hope we see more like this in the future. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as the likes of Battle of the Gods or Broly, but it's a fun ride and I'm sure it sets some groundwork for Super Season 2. If you like Dragonball, even a bit then I recommend you at least give it a watch.

This movie is great for old Toriyama fans and also for newcomers. You can clearly tell how the author had fun writing this movie. It is full of light hearted scenes like the original Dragon Ball that can switch into serious ones in the blink of an eye. It adds new characters that are easy to familiarize and simpathize with. Of course the movie could've been better in 2D, but this CG experiment is not a total failure, and after some minutes the eyes get used to the 3D. Since it's in CG the camera work and the coreography are stunning! The simple and straightforwardplot gives time to the characters to appear on screen and everyone does something even if it's just for a little help. The movie is obiviously filled with Kaiju and Tokusatsu references but we already knew that Toriyama was a big fan of those. So yes, the movie is great and could get a special place in the heart of many fans around the world!

It's kind of fitting for Dragon Ball to bring us back to the Cell Arc after having revived Freeza and milked him for every inch of nostalgia they could get from him. It is also rather fitting considering it's basically the last time the writing in Dragon Ball was any good, with VERY few exceptions [*cough* DBS Broly *cough*]. Fans have been arguing for an eternity about if Super or GT are worse, both of which have their positives and negatives, this movie however really doesn't have much in the way of saving graces. The slice of life aspects of the movie were one of them, something refreshing to see from the Dragon Ball Super series that has so far been dominated almost entirely by action and fighting arcs with little focus on things like the daily lives of characters. The soundtrack, too, was rather well done and lended itself well to the feeling of the movie and for the most part the CGI was of better quality than I expected. That's about all I can say in the way of positives. The character designs for new forms for familiar members of the cast can only be described as ATROCIOUS. The designs featured in this movie honestly feel like they were lifted directly from the sketchbook of a young teenage fan from the 90's. The latter part of the movie is an almost carbon copy of the Cell Arc retold, but infinitely worse. It comes complete with a 1:1 copy of one of the single most iconic scenes in the series but without ANY of the emotional weight that made the scene the first time around, which frankly feels like it majorly devalued the original scene with this cheap knock off. Overall I think this movie was an absolute hot mess, as a fan of Dragon Ball for the last two decades. This movie could have MAJORLY benefited from some more originality from the writing, better fight choreography and some better design work. It majorly dropped the ball in each of those regards.

Really disappointed by this movie. After the amazing looking but rather underwhelming Dragon Ball Super Broly movie, we get this... What I liked is Bulma's with to from the Dragon Balls which is a double edged sword. The Dragon is used as an accessory devaluing and making these sacred items looks like jokes. What you get out of it is getting more horny for Bulma because she looks sexy as fuck in this movie. Then Piccolo does something questionable and asks his potential being unlocked. The reason that is questionable is for these reasons: - Namekian aren't allowed to use the Dragon Balls for selfish reasons. Knowing Piccolois fused with Kami, that should be more of a reason he shouldn't do it - Why didn't anyone else do that until this movie? Why not Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Goku, Vegeta, Goten, Trunks, Videl, Mr Satan or anyone relevant ask for this? It makes everyone look stupid for the sake of the plot. It was a cheap power up and similar nonsense happen that took me out of the movie. Also most the things we see Goku, Vegeta and Broly do is a waste of time. Nothing there mattered, they only existed because we need to spend the runtime somehow. And I think Beevus is also horny for Cheelai. Didn't sit with me that he looked like that at my waifu. Jk. I find it questionable that the Red Ribbon Army can still create such powerful robots that can keep up with the Z Fighters. It was already stupid in the past, now its even worse with the power jumps. Where did they get the resources? And why didn't we see these guys in the past with Dr. Gero? I really looked forward seeing this movie after all the hype, but now I was left completely disappointed. Gohan and Piccolo's final power ups look almost comical. Gohan looks like an adult version of "Teen" Gohan from the Cell Saga with that stupid hairstyle. Ironically the enemy is an emotionaless Cell lookalike. And Piccolo looks like an orange Hulk. Avoid this movie if you aren't desperate to see more Dragon Ball.

I'll start off by saying I felt like I was watching an over the top DBZ fan fiction. I love Dragon Ball Z and it's my favorite show of all time, I was even more hyped going to this movie despite the CGI animation due to my favorite character, Gohan, being the main protagonist. Anyway, safe to say I was incredibly disappointed and felt like I was watching an over the top fan fiction, which will both end up being the theme of this review. From the get go the 3D art style sticks out like a sore thumb. For some reason, instead of beinga true 3D animation, it's 3D imitating 2D and it ends up looking ugly and causes the animation of the non action scenes to look very janky, off and ended up resembling an upgraded PS3 cut scene. While I don't expect a complex plot from Dragon Ball, the plot in this felt incredibly childish and cringe and the attempts at humor fell very flat for me which has never happened to me when watching Dragon Ball before. The point of it being very fan fiction esque and childish also goes for for the villains too, which were disappointing to say the least. I watched the movie dubbed and while some of the voice acting preformnces were good such as Gohan's and Number One's most of them were sub-par, changed, and a far cry from the quality of the Dragon Ball Z dub. Part of the problem was the dialogue felt awkward and off. Maybe this was something to do with the translation and a lot of the dub voice actor performances and is perhaps better in the original japanese version. There were some good moments in the film such as some of fight scenes but this was severely dragged down by all the negatives I mentioned as well as the very fan fiction esque moments (that I won't go into as they're spoilers) and ultimately ends up being wasted potential, potential being something this film had a lot of if it just went in a few different directions and, preferably, stuck to 2D animation but if they really wanted to experiment with 3D, they didn't try to imitate 2D. Ultimately I am left incredibly disappointed and hoping for so much more.

Dragon Ball Super is by far the weakest Dragon Ball Series in the franchise, and sadly it appears that this movie is following the same standard. The Red Ribbon army is back with another set of never ever mentioned members that create machines that are capable to pose a threat to the good guys. It makes you wonder how they were never mentioned until this point other than: the author didn't come up with them. There are other problems that jump from minor but questionable to "If that were possible, why weren't they doing it before?". Bulma still uses the Dragon Balls to make herself look"more beautiful", following the tradition to misuse the Dragon Balls for selfish reasons. You would expect the Dragon Balls to be kept in a secure place in cases of crisis instead wasting wishes like that for trivial and selfish wishes. The real problem starts here: Piccolo wishes for his potential to be unlocked. Why didn't anyone do that until now? You know how much time has wasted watching characters train to get stronger or work for the next power up? Piccolo fused with GOD to get the power to fight Cell. Most of that effort has been in vain since just wishing from the Dragon Balls to do that could have solved several issues in the story. Not only that, but it adds to the pile of many plot devices that give a free power up that likely nobody else is going to use: - Super Saiyan God Ritual - Always carrying the Potara in the cases of crisis. Considering Goku and the gang have a good relationship with the gods, that should not be an issue. Meanwhile Goku, Vegeta and Broly train so Broly learns to use his power. A pointless scene. Why not just wish from the dragon to be able to control your power and your potential to be unlocked like Piccolo? Gohan could wish his potential and power never to disappear and he could fully dedicate his time for his family and research. Speaking of Gohan, the movie is about him. Not only did he neglected his training again and became weak, but also neglected his family because of research. So this movie focuses Gohan to reach his peak again. And because this has been done so often, it makes you wonder if Gohan will keep all that power or has to start from scratch. Also the visuals look better than in the trailer which looked like the opening from Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi Budokai. But they aren't visually pleasing like any other Dragon Ball movie thus far. A disappointment considering Dragon Ball Super Broly set a standard for fans what future productions have in store. Overall, I recommend skipping this movie. The meat of the plot takes a while to get through and it's not something we haven't seen thus far.

Anyone who rated this movie anything above 2/10 has never watched any iteration of the Dragon ball series. Pros: - Nothing Cons: - CGI (there's no such thing as good CGI, but this one was extra bad on top of that) - Doesn't feature Goku or Vegeta- Went from literal GODS fighting back to Red Ribbon android nonsense - Beerus was simpified - Constant Bulma fan service was quite honestly disturbing - The first actual fight happens 55 minutes into the anime (61% into the show) - Random "super ultimate Dr.Gero" villain, forcefully trying to revive the android legacy - Piccolo gains a new transformation through a WISH, not HARD WORK - The dreadful "twist" between the Kim Jung Un look-a-like and the Ribbon boss - The actual level of the fight is so incredibly LOW, it could have ended with Kaioken Goku's pinky; literally a side-character's superhero story - The 2 Androids that were constantly shown in the trailers/promos were practically worthless and didn't bring any depth to the story, literally 2 "machines" that teamed up and ended up being support characters next to Gohan and Piccolo - The main "bad guy" turns out to be a literal Bio Broly 2.0 with a brainless/soulless Cell instead - They wasted a huge Gohan transformation on this pathetic "challenge" - Vegeta wins a spar against Goku at the very end - Broly is crying for something that isn't KAKAROT (simpified) For all intents and purposes: This movie is not cannon and has never existed.

This contains some spoilers. This is a disgraceful sequel to the DBS: Broly movie. While I like the idea of other characters that aren't Goku and Vegeta to get development, the way this was written is just plain cheesy and there are so much inconsistency in the power scaling. The CGL is okay hut compared to what broly movie brought, it was plain bad. The main antagonist, Cell Max, also felt like an insult to how cool Cell was when he first achieve perfect form. Insead, we get a raging giant Cell who threw cheap punches with no skills or form at all. Its asif everyone on the cast suddenly forgot how to fight. Every fight scene just felt like low effort choreography.

Going to do this without spoiling. First off, the cg animation. I absolutely hate it. Looks weird, would fit for a Xenoverse game, not for a bloody movie. There are so many things about this movie that could have been cool. I mean, this thing writes itself. There are some really cool moments, but in between it all this movie is an absolute mess. They flat out re-use a key moment from dbz, and it just comes off stale af. It looked cool, but that's about it. Seriously, a monkey on a type writer could nail this script and get a 9/10. Even if the animation wason par with Brolly, I'd up my score to 6/10 instead of 5/10. What were they thinking? There are some fundamental flaws in the plot, I really love Piccolo in this but I can think of a ton of different ways to do the "spoilers" of his arc different. I don't get how they botched this. We've wanted less focus on Goku and Vegeta for awhile, but I guess the reason Toriyama neglected his side characters for so long is he couldn't write any meaningful story? This is a huge disappointment. I say mixed feelings because I liked some things, but this movie is a great example of terrible execution, still watch it because if Toriyama's proctologist wrote this we'd still watch it, as that's what being a Dragon Ball fan means.

Akira Toriyama might be the author to the most influential Shōnen Battle series, yet his true calling has always been comedy. While "Dragon Ball" might be famous for its planet busting action, its heart is 100% comedy. Where "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" was a beautifully animated omage to the action in the "Dragon Ball" series, "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" is a love letter to what is uniquely and distinctly "Dragon Ball". A master of his craft, Toriyama has created a movie that had me laughing from the opening sequence to the very end. He plays the common super hero tropes and clichés we areso intimately familiar with like a fiddle, flipping and twisting the super hero story into something that feels both "Super" and "Dragon Ball". "Super Hero" also feels like a return to what Toriyama wanted to create post Cell Saga, to let Gohan take over as the main character with Piccolo at his side. Considering Gohan’s history as the great Saiyaman and the inclusion of the Red Ribbon army, Androids and Cell, there’s a certain sense of nostalgia to that time. Before multiple universes and galaxy bending beings of mass destruction, a time when "Dragon Ball" felt like it flowed with much more grace than it does now. As much as I love Goku, it’s certainly fresh seeing a "Dragon Ball" story omit him entirely in favor of its side characters. Both Gohan and Piccolo especially feels neglected considering they sit firmly in Goku’s and Vegeta’s shadow within the rest of the "Dragon Ball" canon. Gohan has always been my favorite character of the cast since his showdown with Cell, so to see him get a sort of redemption was a joy. Having been relegated to the boring family man, this movie aims to elevate him to new heights, where he can be both scientist "and" warrior. Piccolo has barely had any agency since the Frieza Saga, and he shows in this movie that he has plenty of capacity to lead a "Dragon Ball" story, both as a warrior and a comedian. The elephant in the room to many is the 3D animation. Many felt a surge of disappointment when they saw that this movie was in 3D, especially considering *Broly*’s absolutely stellar 2D animation. I for one think this movie was beautiful, and I think the 2D effects pop of the screen due to the contrast with the 3D animation. The fights are fluid and they utilized the freedom of camera movement well to justify the choice they made. I also think Toriyama’s style is uniquely fitting for an adaptation into 3D. Its simpler character designs and rounder shapes makes the transition from the classic 2D much less jarring, and with the decades of "Dragon Ball" fighting games to back it up it’s fair to say this series has the 3D transition figured out. I must also mention the soundtrack, as I absolutely loved the music in this movie and how it set the mood for each scene and elevated every fight. To conclude, this movie feels like a return to form for Toriyama. Not saying he lost his ability over time, I just feel like he never got the chance to truly flex his narrative and comedic muscles since the conclusion of the Cell Saga over 30 years ago. Every joke lands and parodying the super hero genre this well almost makes it possible to hear Toriyama’s own laughs as he sits in his chair writing the movie through the screen as you’re watching. A famously free spirit, this is what happens when a genius is allowed free reign over his own property, a comedic action masterpiece more than worthy of the legacy helmed by the "Dragon Ball"-franchise.

By far the worst Dragonball related anything ive ever seen Im gonna keep this one short cause i dont think this movie deserves my time of day This movie felt so much like an OVA for DB Heroes. The characters felt so off (mainly Whis, Bulma, and Beerus; but dr hedo even though this was his only showing was also inconsistent from the beginning to the end of the movie), other than the main characters the antagonists arent explored in any way at all. The 2 robots felt like whiteboards of characters with nothing redeeming about them. Cell Max who was the big bad was literally ascreaming monster which provided no interesting dialogue between him and the main characters and the whole thing abt piccolo almost dying which caused gohan to go from 1 to 9198288839291847757591981577195719824977192749717289582981719274 was absolutely bullshit. The power scaling in dragonball now is absolutely fucked, it used to be one of its strong points and now everyone is just as strong as the gods with absolutely no practice whatsoever. This is the shittiest piece of dragonball ever and I cant believe people are still riding toriyamas dick even after releasing amazing works like Battle of Gods and Broly. 2/10 is already generous, if the VFX and Animation werent as good as they were I dont think 1/10 would be low enough for this movie. An absolute waste of my money

THE REAL STUFF: Dragon Ball: Super Hero is a movie about REDEMPTIVE LOVE & LASER ATTACKS. You know if you love that. I hope you love that. I love that. People of good adult taste love that. Dragon Ball: Super Hero is UNBELIEVABLY good. Dragon Ball: Super Hero is the 22nd Dragon Ball movie and does not whatsoever succumb to franchise bloat - rather, it serves as a lasting and for all-time love letter for the franchise and apology tour for when sometimes the franchise has gone awry - which is a shockingly film essential point we are much more comfortable elaborating upon in the verymuch extended video form of this review, available at the COMBOFANS Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt7BxPDHe8U Text review continues below, but please do check out the video, we'll love you forever for it. Me and my brother Matthew are avid anime fans, we play in this space across the decades. We love from the 60s when Osamu Tezuka took off like a rocket ship all the way to these bizarre roaring 20's 2.0 when Konosuba is the GOAT. IRREGARDLESS, this Dragon Ball movie is NO DOUBT one of the most wonderful and delightful and special things we have ever seen. The animation is breathtakingly beautiful, with simply stunning fight scenes that will leave you on the edge of your seat. This was a pitch-perfect transition to 3D, and I'm all but certain this is the way further Akira Toriyama projects should be made - a thought concurred at the time of this review writing by the unveiling of Akira Toriyama's Sand Land film, so eat your heart out! The characters are expertly crafted and fleshed out, with incredible depth and personalities that truly make them feel alive. I will never be able to explain enough the sheer love that me and my brother Matthew have for Piccolo - the consistency of that affection and the lasting love we have grown for him over the however mutually long we've known him (me since I could think, him for like a year, more on that in the superlength video review) but we have been so rewarded for investing emotion into this series at the time of the Dragon Ball: Super Hero film and I couldn't feel better about it. Gohan is hilarious. Videl is adorable. Pan is fantastic and I'm so glad she isn't trapped in GT, now. Dr Hedo is an enormously compelling character with a really serious and politically sensitive yet affirming and wonderful arc - now THAT is a gorgeous surprise of the film. Absolute highlight of the watching and something we elaborate our feelings upon SO much in the video review. The story is excellently written and packed with action, adventure, and thrills that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. It's really amazing how well it plays into the regular openings that meant a lot to me when I was young and stupid - that being, Piccolo is here to open us off, gets attacked while meditating, and then it's nonstop pumpup action and feelings and fighting until the conclusion of this gorgeous flick. Reminds me a lot of DEAD ZONE, which I say as somebody that watched DEAD ZONE first out of anything so of course I love it so much I could just fully die. Nostalgia is a gorgeous drug. Even irregardless of the nostalgia play providing a BIG BOOST, which I think is really legitimate because that's a Feeling and Dragon Ball loves FEELINGS (They make you stronger!) the film manages to balance humor, intense action, and emotional drama so perfectly that it is impossible not to get emotionally invested in the story. The final battle, which I won't elaborate on too deeply - watch the movie & watch our video review to hear me say everything about that, thank you - is some of the most rewarding and exciting and amazing stuff I've yet witnessed in the medium. I literally feel like Roger Avary of Pulp Fiction fame regarding the KONOSUBA movie when I talk about this thing. My love is so apparent and obvious and overbearing - but it's earnest, it's honest, it grew there with time and effort and that's what this movie best is - a love letter to the lasting endurance of Dragon Ball, and the consequences of being a decades-long story. Hence, Uncle Piccolo, my beloved.. HUGELY RECOMMENDED. WINS OUR SPECIAL 'REEL ART' AWARD FOR MOVIES AS ART. I remember that after seeing the first trailer for this movie, I was genuinely worried about its visuals. The CGI didn't impress me. The next clip, released some time later, looked better, but I was still unsure if CGI was the right choice for a movie belonging to the Dragon Ball franchise, especially after such marvelous spectacle that the Broly movie was. It was quite intriguing and worrysome to hear that the next Dragon Ball movie wouldn't be made in a 2D technique, but would be a CGI movie instead. Well, it appears that, at least for the Super Hero movie, CGI turned out better thangood. It looked simply awesome and offered detailed models, smooth animation, a good color palette, and stunning special effects (including those you can see when characters are powering up). I can understand that it might take a while to get used to it (longer or shorter, depending on a viewer's tolerance towards CGI), but at least in my case, it didn't take long to get used to it and stop noticing it, as if the movie was done in the same way as all the previous Dragon Ball movies. The story focuses on Gohan and Piccolo, offering a refreshing change from the usual Goku and Vegeta-centric narratives. It was a pleasure to see a movie dedicated to other beloved characters, especially those that many fans (including me) have wished to see in the spotlight. Super Hero's first half might feel a bit slow at times, but such pacing is understandable, given the need to introduce new characters and establish their motivations or goals. While a more dynamic approach wouldn't have hurt, of course, the slower pace was appropriate for setting up the main plotline. While in general I don't consider this movie superior to the one about Broly, I admit that in terms of soundtrack it's on a slightly higher level. Not that much better, but I could memorize more tracks from it than from the Broly movie, including the main theme. They also felt more fitting to the general vibe offered by Super Hero. Hearing all the effects amplified by speakers at the cinema was simply a fantastic experience. In terms of fighting choreography, the element that's very important when talking about anything related to this franchise, Super Hero might be the best Dragon Ball movie ever created. The action scenes were filled with intricate details and complexity, whether it was hand-to-hand combat or ki attacks. The well-directed fights, set against beautiful landscapes, were surely a visual treat for one's eyes. Definitely, Super Hero is worth watching, and I'm saying it as a person who was not initially hyped. With its blend of humor, action, stunning visuals, and a great soundtrack, it's sure to entertain Dragon Ball fans of all kinds. I had fun both while watching it for the first time in the theater and re-watching it at home some months later. Note: I originally reviewed this movie on September 13, 2022. However, after re-reading it two years later, I decided to make several improvements. As a result, I deleted the old review and submitted this revised version. I consider the new version way better than the old one.

This movie actually worked for me. It's not quite Dragon Ball at its best or most bombastic, but it does the job well and looks really good doing it. The CGI is done exceptionally well, minus a couple of minor snafus (no, Gohan's hair does not look good when fully transformed), and looks particularly amazing during some of its most exceptional fight scenes. It also gives opportunities to show off the fight choreography from more angles, which makes these fights some of the more dynamic and interesting to watch in the series. The new android villains are fun to watch, particularly as they're programmed totry and (badly) emulate super heroes. They aren't just puppets, either, with the capacity to think for themselves and, thus, capable of change over the course of the movie. Their ability to fight our heroes also seems believable to some degree, as they're just really good at reading moves, which makes them a threat in a drawn out fight. As for the flaws, well... it's Dragon Ball, so the reason for the fighting in the first place is contrived and an overlarge idiot plot. I don't come here for the reasons, and frankly, this movie did better than most of Dragon Ball in this regard. What I don't like is that, given all the power scaling we've been through in this show, how two random androids are just made that can outclass some of the more powerful fighters in the roster, and not just because they're good at reading moves. More frustrating than that is the revival of Cell for this one. Recycling old villains has never worked for me, and Kaiju Cell really doesn't. It's nice to see a team battle against him, but that's about it. While Piccolo is front and center and great to watch, most of the other characters just don't do much, and even Gohan seems just here to get the win in the end. I like Piccolo's new form, so-so on Gohan's. And yeah, Trunks, Goten, Krillin, and 18 largely just seem to be here for the fun of it. Goku, Vegeta and Brolly are kept out of the action due to plot inconvenience, which is fine because I don't want them always hogging the spotlight. Overall, it's a Dragon Ball movie, and there's going to be some bad with the good. With thankfully not too much of the latter in this one, I was pleasantly surprised, if not blown away as I was with the Broly movie.
